Hey there Nathan!! This was a wonderful practice this morning. I am noticing my body feeling more open and stronger. Stronger connection and stronger feeling. The poses were all very smooth, except this one- for me. Since shoulder surgery 2019, I have not experienced this new movement... prayer hands behind the back. I can meet them upside down and raise to lower ribs- unable to flip my hands at all!! Interesting how yoga just continues to teach me my own boundaries. I would like to work up to flipping my hands around some day!!
Hello again, what is the name of this asana? And when lifting to this point- are you keeping your feet completely flat and strong? I think mine wanted to lift.
Michelle, that’s purvottanasana. In theory the soles of the feet are meant to touch the ground but that’s a tall order. The benefit of the feet touching the ground is 1) it mechanically helps to pull the anterior side of the thighs higher up and 2) it gives a complete stretch to the nerves of the fronts of the thighs and ankles.
Michelle, that is reverse namaste and it is a tough action, especially for a shoulder that’s been injured. To help with movement in that direction I suggest doing the pose you can do (palms together and finger pointing down) and then working on squeezing the shoulders and elbows back behind you. The squeezing of the shoulder blades and the rotation given in this action is a great start to opening that range of motion.
I loved today's long holds in the poses and I definitely feel my hips now! Thank you very much, Nathan, for this great and calming practice! Namaste! 🥰
