Is it the way of the verse for the purpose of expressing it, linearly, because we need words?   The suggestion is that it's a process.  Because would we not want connectivity, steadiness,  peace and happiness from the word go ?    I am reminded of something I have heard you say James, yoga is a practice and a process; and I think that would fit here - it's ongoing and cyclical in nature !
