So we work from gross to subtle but we are normally experiencing the gross.  Would then an subtler appreciation of say  sound / touch / form / taste / smell, on account of them having a subtler dimension, be a good starting point?  How would one experience that - it's easy to say "really see, really taste", is it a desire to see / taste more, clearer, that steers us or our "innate" subtleness?  How much of it relies on conscious effort and would leaving it alone to happen be a better way?  I have experienced in my practice "trying too hard", and when I realised or someone else pointed it out to me I have become disheartened...just thinking aloud here.  Thank you James for the opportunity to explore that.
