Day 7: Empathy & Compassion

Description

We open with a short sit to land and open. John recaps the historical context and evolution of Buddhism that leads to the primary method of the Bodhisattva which is Compassion. He dives in deep to explain how Compassion works biologically and culturally, referencing the latest evolutionary and neurological research.

Human beings are wired to be natural cooperators and assist in each other’s flourishing, and John so gently and non-judgmentally explains what gets in the way of our behaving with care and kindness. The primary antidote to our feeling of separateness is to hone a sense of common humanity, know that we all share the same desire to be happy and avoid suffering, and make an effort to be physically together.

We conclude with an exploration of two of the traditional practices: The Sevenfold Cause and Effect and The Exchange of Self and Other.

Thank you for this guidance in the practice of compassion. This course continues to be of great benefit. I usually feel uncomfortable resistance when I am asked to think compassionately of a person who has been hurtful, but in this episode I felt a lightening of spirit when I did this. If only Compassion and its practices had been a core subject in high school! *smiling bow*
