Erich Schiffmann

For many of us here at Yoga Anytime and worldwide, Erich Schiffmann (aka Papa Schiffmann) is the teacher who first gave us permission to find our own yoga. His whole being radiates gentle, loving encouragement. His continual suggestion to “relax as much as possible and dare to follow the inner guidance” has lead so many of us into lives we could never have imagined.

Like the early rishis, Erich listens for the teachings and shares his latest findings or as he puts it: "reports the news." In letting us in on his freshest insights, before they are totally clear, he models courage and vulnerability. He does not rely on the texts for authority, but if you are familiar with the collected writings, you can see that he is discovering similar truths as the early sages did.

Growing up on the beaches of Southern California, Erich came to the practices of yoga through the teachings of Krishnamurti and Yogananda. At 19, he went to England to be with Krishnamurti at Brockwood Park. From there, Erich traveled to India to begin study with B.K.S. Iyengar and T.K.V. Desikachar, meeting many wonderful, generous, and kind teachers along the way, including Dona Hollerman, Mary Stewart, Vanda Scarvelli, and Joel Kramer. He credits Joel with sharing the tools that set his yoga free of others instructions. He quotes Vanda with telling him to “put more love into it." After teaching in England for about five years, he returned to California and now resides in Santa Monica, California with his wife Leslie Bogart and their dog Bella. He teaches regular classes at Exhale and leads workshops around the country.

We are so delighted Erich is here at Yoga Anytime. We hope you will dive into the very special offering of his Freedom Style Teacher Training and Immersion launching on Sunday, April 19, 2015, and join us for Our Practices, a show totally inspired by Erich’s encouragement of finding our own yoga.
