Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 2

James recites and translates verses 2.1 - 2.3, introducing us to Arjuna's dilemma and setting the stage for the unfolding of the Gita.

2.1 - 2.3: Arjuna is Confused

James recites and translates verses 2.4 - 2.6, unpacking Arjuna's dilemma with a story as a way to understand how we work with patterns and gurus.

2.4 - 2.6: Arjuna is Overwhelmed

James recites and translates verses 2.7 - 2.8 of the Gita. As Arjuna surrenders, he opens himself up to the teachings of Krishna.

James guides us in a devotional chant to Krishna, also known as the Maha Mantra. Allow your heart to sing.

James recites and interprets verses 2.9 -2.10 of the Gita. He invites us to pause for a moment, and allow the voice of intuition to guide us.

James recites and translates verses 2.11 - 2.13 of the Gita. Krishna advises Arjuna that change is inevitable, and to just be steady.

James recites and translates verses 2.14 - 2.16 of the Gita, where Krishna emphasizes that a yogi is one who is established in steadiness.

2.14 - 2.16 Be Steady

James recites and translates verses 2.17 - 2.18 of the Gita. When we have the courage to stand up for what we believe in, nothing is ever lost.

2.17 - 2.18 Fight Skillfully

James recites and translates verses 2.19 - 2.21. Krishna shares that the essence of the Soul or Spirit is eternal, everlasting, and ancient.

2.19 - 2.21: Dangerous Verses

James recites and translates verse 2.22, emphasizing that the Soul is undying and moves through bodies, much like we move through clothing.

2.22: The Embodied Soul

James recites and translates verses 2.23 - 2.25 of the Gita. Krishna speaks of the undying nature of the soul, which is subtle and inconceivable.

2.23 - 2.25: Undying Essence

James recites and translates verses 2.26 - 2.28 from the Gita. Krishna eases Arjuna's fears around the notion of death, which is mysterious.

2.26 - 2.28 Have No Fear

James recites and translates verse 2.29 from the Gita, which points towards cultivating a sense of wonder.

James recites and translates verse 2.30 from the Gita, reminding us that everything is conscious and unfolding as it needs to.

The destiny of the river is to flow to the sea, which symbolizes oneness or wholeness. We sing a devotional song about the nature of the river.

James recites and translates verses 2.31 - 2.32 from the Gita. As a great warrior, Arjuna's Dharma is to fight for the wellbeing of the whole.

James recites and translates verses 2.33 - 2.36 from the Gita. Krishna reminds Arjuna what will happen if he caves in and does not fight.

2.33 - 2.36: Don't Cave In

James recites and translates verses 2.37 from the Gita. When we engage on the path of authentic action there's no loosing, therefore rise up!

James recites and translates verse 2.55 from the Gita. Once one becomes fully contented within, then one can be described as an established yogi.

James leads us in a devotional and beautiful song and chant dedicated to Krishna and Vishnu.

James recites and translates verses 2.56 - 2.57 from the Gita. When we become centered and steady, we can access our intuitive and deep inner knowing.

James unpacks verse 2.58 of the Gita, reminding us of the story of the The Tortoise and the Hare.

James unpacks verse 2.59 of the Bhagavad Gita, where he explores how we can work skillfully and moderately with our senses.

When we work patiently and lovingly with our senses to get to know them in an intimate way, we can become masters of our sensory experiences.

Your senses can be very powerful, but if we can turn them back to their Source and channel them towards your highest ideal then they can support you.

When we lose ourselves and become overly attached to external objects, the most important step in finding ourselves is acknowledging that we are lost.

You know you're truly serene when your serenity is not disturbed by the influences that would have previously robbed you of your calm state.

2.64: Natural Sweetness

James recites and translates verses 2.65 from the Gita. When we experience deep serenity and a state of tranquility, disease naturally falls away.

2.65: Power of Serenity

From the integration of Self we can build a solid foundation and begin to find peace and happiness.

2.66 Invitation to Integration

One who allows their senses to run the show will be like a boat in the wind, therefore learn to be the captain of your own ship.

2.67: Be the Skipper

When you can hold your senses well and work with them mindfully, then you can deepen your connection to your innate wisdom.

2.68: Hold Your Senses Well

James recites and translates verses 2.69 from the Gita: when it is night for all beings the wise one is watchful.

2.69: Wise and Wakeful

James recites and translates verse 2.70 of the Gita: Be like the ocean—it has its tides, but always remains full.

2.70: The Ocean is Always Full

The wise one who is in a state of peace works skillfully with his or her senses without becoming consumed by them.

2.71: Indivisible Human Being

If you stand in a deep peacefulness of your essence, all of your confusion will melt away.

2.72 Confusion Disolves

James shares a closing invocation of the second chapter of the Gita explaining that the teachings of the text is an everlasting conversation.

James leads us through a song of Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu: May all beings everywhere be happy and free.
